Athletic scholarships are awarded on the merit of being able to play in a college sport team. Athletic scholarships are very popular in the United States, while being virtually non-existent in other countries.

In the United States most athletic scholarships are regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Association consists of three divisions: Division I, Division II and Division III. Only schools that belong to Divisions I and II can offer athletic scholarships.  Currently there are more than 460,000 students in the U.S. receiving athletic scholarships each single year. These students compete in 23 different sports.

It is a coach at a college who grants scholarships to students. All the information about scholarships for different sports in different colleges is readily available to the public.
